New Bern NC Plein Air Watercolor paintings by Raleigh Fine Artist

I was recently in New Bern for Holiday Art and Gift show. I had always wanted to paint New Bern and this gave me an opportunity! Because of the show schedule, I had to paint in the morning and evening. And paint quickly!

I painted this after the show. I had about 30 minutes at the Marina! But, I enjoyed working quickly and learned a thing or two.

I painted this during the day while my wonderful wife- Mica stayed at our booth. These sailboats had docked at the Union Point park. The water was high that day. And I got flooded once! My supplies, and easel got a good soaking and I lost a watercolor block! But, I kept on painting. The boats sailed off at some point, but, I had a good drawing and tonal design in place by that time.

This is my brave effort at painting quite a few boats in short amount of time! Another painting done after the show. 30 minutes. Slightly larger than the previous one. I was forced to use 300 lb paper since I lost my 140 lb watercolor block in the flooding! It is amazing what you can do with watercolors in short amount of time! Of course, if you are willing to take a bold approach.

"New Bern Morning". 12x21. Watercolor on paper. Artist - Tesh Parekh

I saw this morning view of New Bern from my hotel and it was breath-taking! I had to wait for couple of days before I could paint it. Again, I had to work quickly while working on a slightly larger scale (almost 1/2 sheet). Mother Nature and Watercolors- two of the best teachers one can have.

I hope to take these sketches, memories and other references back to my studio and work on several other paintings of beautiful New Bern.
