Live Event Painting at the Arbors in Charlotte NC for Inspire Weddings & Marriage magazine

I did this painting for inaugural issue of the Inspire Wedding & Marriage Magazine. I was invited by Terrilynn Cook of T. Michelle Events and Stephanie Huxter. Stephanie is publisher of the magazine. This was my second event with Terrilynn (Inspire Smart Success event in Durham NC was the first one). This was a style shoot for one of the stories in the magazine: “Leaving a Legacy of Faith, Hope & Love”. The venue was the Arbors in Cleveland NC (outside Charlotte). I drove from Raleigh and arrived on location while the venue was being setup. It was exciting to be in the company of so many talented vendors! All the action shots of me painting here were captured by amazing The- Israel (Richard Israel). Brian Patnode of Whitewash Films has produced a fun behind-the-scene film of this shoot.

I was aware of the theme for my painting. But, live event paintings always have an element of uncertainty and surprise! This is true for live wedding paintings as well. Based on the time-frame, I decided to paint a watercolor on paper. I setup where I will have a good view. This was a luxury! When I paint live at weddings and receptions, I do not always have the ideal location where I can set up! There was plenty of natural light but it was overcast so I used my own light. I sketched the background before the dinner had started. The dinner party was large! During the dinner, I sketched and painted directly on the paper. This was different from my usual process of making reference sketches and then finishing my painting. The reason being the time limit. My aim was to finish the painting by end of the shoot. Which I did. Stephanie was thrilled to have the finished painting! The painting is now in her collection.Check out the images below to see finished painting and work-in-process images.

I enjoyed working with Stephanie and Terrilynn. Stephanie was kind enough to provide me ad-space in the magazine. She even designed the ad for me! I am truly grateful to both and look forward to future assignments with them. Please check out this wonderful magazine. It will inspire you.

My next live painting will be at a wedding reception in South Boston, Va. That will be a large watercolor. My latest live wedding painting was an oil. So, I am enjoying painting in both watercolors and oils and also the mix of ceremonies and receptions. I will be taking couple of days “off” soon and will be painting on the beautiful NC coast. Love painting en plein air…

Raleigh NC Live Event Artist – Live Event Sketch at Top of the Hill Restaurant in Chapel Hill

Invisible Groom. Live Event Sketch in Watercolor.
Invisible Groom. Live Event Sketch in Watercolor.

I was recently in Chapel Hill to promote my Live Wedding Paintings. I was invited by my friend Joye Speight of Virtue Events for a wedding show called “Invisible Groom”. The show was at Top of the Hill Restaurant. I enjoyed meeting many of my fellow wedding vendors and couples. And while at the event, I did this watercolor sketch! Couple of years ago, I had done a live event painting in oil at Top of the Hill restaurant. After the event, I stopped by UNC Bell Tower to do a plein air watercolor painting. I love this part of Chapel Hill. Full of life.

Live Event Painting – Ayesha Mian at the Hyatt House in Charlotte NC

Here is a live event painting I had done at Charlotte NACE’s “My Big Fat Indian Wedding”:

Charlotte-Live-Event-Painter-nc
Ayesha Mian at Hyatt House for Charlotte NACE's "My Big Fat Indian Wedding". Live Event Painting. 16x20. Watercolor on Paper.

I frequently travel to Charlotte for photography assignments. This year I have photographed corporate events in Charlotte and also photographed an Indian wedding in Rock Hill SC (right outside of Charlotte). And I will be back in Charlotte to photograph another Indian wedding at the Ballentyne Resort. So, it was fitting to paint live at Charlotte NACE’s “My Big Fat Indian Wedding”!  As a professional photographer, I often photograph multi-day Indian weddings.

The event was Charlotte NACE’s monthly meeting at the Hyatt House. Ayesha had decorated the banquet room for this event. The food was catered by the Bombay Grille. This was a fun and educational event. Ayesha talked about various Indian wedding customs and explained many of the traditional terms. Her team participated in the event as well. There were also dance performances. Ayesha also answered many questions from NACE members.

I did this painting as a watercolor due to the short duration of the event. I kept the painting size at 16×20. I enjoyed talking to many NACE members as I painted. Mica had travelled with me for this event. We gave away 2 prints of this painting. I finished most of the painting on the location. But, due to the time-constraint, I applied finishing touches back in my studio. I will be producing the prints and look forward to sharing those with the NACE members.

Below is my setup before I started the painting. I sketched the background first and then laid some of the initial washes.

My setup for the live event painting at the Hyatt House in Charlotte NC

Since part of the event was by the pool outside, I had to wait before sketching in event guests. When Ayesha made her presentation, I sketched her directly on the painting. Normally, I make reference sketches. But, I had to work differently here because of the schedule. The rest was easy. Almost, easy! Working in the full color and completing many of the details.

Here I am with Ayesha. I enjoyed meeting Ayesha and her husband (glad to meet another husband & wife team!). I look forward to working with her at weddings and events.

Me with Ayesha Mian.

April was a busy month for live paintings! I did a live wedding painting commission in Chapel Hill (previous post) and also did another live event painting at a Stacie Francombe and Preston Bailey event in Durham NC. I will be posting that painting next.

I have several inquiries for both live wedding paintings and live event paintings. I am hoping to get some more commissions. I also paint from reference photos.

Ciao.

Live Event Painting for the Triangle Wine Experience- a video

Tesh Parekh- wedding painter. Live event painting for Triangle Wine Experience 2010.

When I paint live at weddings and events, I sometimes photograph my setup and work-in-progress paintings. But, I do not get the opportunity to capture my painting process on video. For past two years, I have done live event painting for the Triangle Wine Experience. Last year, Island Sound DJ’s & Video created a time-lapsed video as I painted. I finally got the opportunity to upload it:

As you will notice, the interior was pretty dark! Not to mention that people were in constant motion! When painting live, I do not take photos for the reference. So, I have to make many sketches and I have to sketch quickly. My latest live wedding painting commission was for a first dance. I had less than 2 minutes to sketch the bride and groom as they danced, surrounded by friends and family!

I now carry my own light for indoor location work. I have also made further changes to my easel. The traditional oil painting easel just does not work for watercolors. I had modified my old french easel, but, it still was not easy to use. Recently, I just took it apart and sorta redesigned it. Hopefully, it will inspire to paint more! The wedding painting commissions that I have completed so far were in oil. I have another watercolor commission coming up soon…

Triangle Wine Experience 2011- A Live Event Painting by Raleigh NC Live Wedding and Event Artist

This was my second year painting live for the Triangle Wine Experience. Last year, I had done a 11″x14″ watercolor. This year, I decided to do an oil. I visited the location in advance to checkout lighting and find a good spot. ISES team had really transformed the inside of a warehouse! I used 16″x20″ linen. I also carried my studio floor lamp. Indoor events are difficult to paint! Especially formal events with subdued lighting! Oil painting is especially challenging because of the glare.

I started the painting by toning the linen. I painted rough under-painting in Transparent Red oxide. It was still early so most folks were not yet sitting at the table. My solution was to do pencil sketches of people in action while I waited for the under-painting to dry little bit. Then it was painting in full color. Of course, in such environment, it is hard to judge hue, value and intensity! You have to find a way to create depth in the painting. One advantage of oils is the slow drying. Watercolors will dry faster (but, not fast enough when you need!). However, it is easier to lay quick washes with watercolor! Not so with oils! Filling up linen with details and brush-stroke was a long process! I really sweated with this painting!

I had the painting finished, photographed and framed in time for the auction. My hope is that it will get a good price for the Frankie Lemmon Foundation. I am glad to be part of this event to support a great cause.

I am keeping busy with painting and photography! I have many inquiries for painting live at weddings and events. I hope to travel more this year for commissions. I am constantly learning. And that is a good thing…

Studio Apron- a watercolor sketch by Raleigh NC Live Wedding and Event Painter

I worked on this sketch for several days! I started it one night while working in my studio. I noticed this old apron hanging on a shelf and liked its form. I used dry brush watercolor technique. I started with a pencil sketch. I used limited palette of colors to lay the washes. And then built up the form with hatchings and cross-hatchings. I got really busy with photography work after I started it. I used Winsor Newton watercolors on Strathmore Series 300 CP paper. I used just couple of Winsor Newton sable brushes.

It has been a busy 2011! I started the year by finishing a commissioned oil portrait. I have worked on several photography assignments since and have blogged a lot about some of those. Although I have sketched, I haven’t been able to blog about my paintings as much.

On February 5, I will be painting live at the Triangle Wine Experience (TWE). I may do a watercolor or oil painting. I did a live watercolor painting for TWE last year. I look forward to doing another one this year.

Live Event Painting for ISES/ NACE/ TBA Holiday Party at Crabtree Marriott- by Raleigh NC Live Wedding and Event Painter

Leon Jordan’s Continentals Orchestra, Live Event Painting, 12″x16″, Watercolor on Arches 140 lb CP paper.

This was my second year doing live painting for ISES, NACE amd TBA annual holiday party. The party was for Toys for Tots benefit.

As always, I enjoyed meeting my fellow professionals. The party was held at Crabtree Marriott Hotel . My friend Jule Lee is a Sr. Exec at the hotel. The food was fabulous!

Last year I had picked different composition. This year I decided to paint the orchestra. There were quite a few musicians! I had about 30 minutes to do a pencil sketch. Below is my setup before I started the painting:

As with any indoor live painting, the challenge is always the lighting! But, I was fortunate to find a spot with decent light on my watercolor block and palette. I also carry portable light, but, it can be a distraction to the well-designed party lighting. So, I avoid it, if possible.

Of corse, the orchestra folks were in constant motion and were off the stage well before I finished the painting! So, painting from memory was a necessity. I had the painting finished and framed, in time for door prizes. Taylor Pittman of Taylormade DJ Services won it! Below is my finished painting in the easel (orchestra had returned to the stage):

I am excited about 2011! I have received many inquiries about live wedding paintings and also started booking brides. If you are a bride who is looking for something unique, a live wedding painting is worth considering! Most of the wedding budget is spent on guests, while a live painting not only captures the wedding through artists’s eye, but also lasts forever!

I have also been doing plein air work. Below is one of my favorite recent watercolor sketch:

The Raleigh Big Garden Party- a live event painting by Tesh Parekh

The Raleigh Big Garden Party. 13×19. Watercolor on Saunder’s Waterford 140 lb rough paper.

Last year I had done a plein air watercolor painting of Raleigh Rose Garden (see one of my earlier posts). When I heard that Tobi Gowen was looking for artists to paint live at the Raleigh Big Garden party, I was excited!

The Raleigh big garden party was organized to promote Raleigh little theatre, the Raleigh rose garden, Raleigh little theatre productions and the Raleigh garden tour.  The theme of the party was Italian. Many artists painted live at this event: Heather Robinson, Rebecca Worters, Laura Azzi and Winnie-Ferguson. I also had the opportunity to meet Nancy Stolfo-Corti. Nancy is the author of the book “The Other Side of Tuscany”. The live music was provided by Mebanella.

It turned out to be a beautiful evening! The weather cooled down and it did not rain. Many folks stopped by to see my painting. My good friend Robert Johnson kep me company. Robert Johnson is the Principal of Triangle Public Strategies, LLC.  He assists organizations with fundraising, advocacy, and grant writing services.

Watercolor is my preferred medium for painting live weddings and events. I like it for couple of reasons. I like painting people: watercolor allows me to paint people quickly. I am also able to paint on sizes 11×14 and bigger. I am perfecting my oil painting techniques and will eventually paint live events in both watercolors and oils (I do plein air paintings in oils).

I used Saunder’s paper, Holbein paints and Escoda brushes. Although the painting looks colorful, I had used mostly muted colors. I will be donating this painting to Raleigh Little Theatre.

Sasha Souza at the Cobblestone Hall- a live event painting by Tesh Parekh

Sasha Souza at Cobblestone Hall. Live Event painting. Watercolor. 11×14.

Sasha Souza is one of the premiere event designers and a top innovator in the wedding industry. She is one of only a handful of wedding designers who have been named a Master Bridal Consultant, the highest designation given by the Association of Bridal Consultants. Souza is the recipient of numerous awards including the Special Events Magazine Gala Award winner for “Best Dining Tabletop Design”, Event Solutions Magazine “Designer of the Year” and three ISES Westie Awards

The Greater Triangle North Carolina Chapter of the International Special Events Society (ISES) hosted “Emerging Trends with Sasha Souza ”

This event was held at the Cobblestone Hall in Raleigh. This is a brand new venue- ideal for weddings and events.

ISES had invited me to paint live at the event. Earlier in the day, I had photographed Sasha’s lunch with ISES and TWCE members at 18 Seaboard Restaurant. We will be posting images of that event on our photography blog: iwpphotography.wordpress.com

Sasha was scheduled to present at 7 PM. I setup earlier to get started with the drawing and composition. Due to the length of the event, I decided to use 11×14 format. I used Holbein watercolors, Saunders Waterford 140 lb rough surface paper, and mostly Escoda brushes- my new favorites!

Image below shows completed drawing.

As with many indoor events, the difficult part is the lighting. In the beginning I had outside light on my setup. Once the Sun went down, there were many sources of light- each with different color temperature! But, live event painting is like a roller-coaster ride: once you are buckled-up and rolling, all you can do is have fun!

I enjoyed meeting my friends at ISES and many nice folks who stopped by to see me work. I wouldn’t say this was the easiest painting, but I think I have captured Sasha well- see the image above! This painting was presented to Sasha at the end of the event. She shared many kind words. I enjoyed listening to her while I was painting.

We have her latest book “Signature Sasha: Magnificent Weddings by Design”- I look forward to reading it!

This has been a good week for painting. Today I drove to Kinston for the Kinston CCA annual paint out. I did two paintings: 16×20 oil on linen and 13×19 watercolor on paper. I will be posting those later.

Tomorrow I will be in Wilmington to sign limited edition prints of my painting “Building Dreams”. This watercolor was selected for the 2010 Parade of Homes magazine cover. Check my blog later for more information on this painting.

As an artist, I enjoy painting all subjects: portraits, still life and landscape. However, I love painting from life the most. Both plein air painting and live wedding & event painting offer me the opportunity to do just that! I accept commissions and I travel!
