I painted this for a Southern Bride & Groom style shoot. The theme of the shoot was New Orleans Wedding inspiration. I have been an SB&G vendor for awhile: just lovely people to work with. I highly recommend them. You can check out more information of this shoot on their blog. I had started this painting on location and then finished in my studio. The Hudson Manor is a beautiful venue. I wanted to paint something different from what I normally paint at the weddings. So, I had the couple pose in front of this scenic view with the chapel.

I wanted to do something different to add to the uniqueness of live painting. When I arrived at the venue, our beautiful model Danielle’s photo session was in the progress. I liked how she was posing, so decided to paint her. She was kind enough to hold the pose for me while I painted quickly. Brent captured me painting- thanks to him and his lovely wife Anna for sharing the images. This was an event painting, but, it fairly captures Danielle’s likeness. 2014 was a good year for plein air painting. I had continued painting en plein air, well into November. Of course, late in the year, weather can be a challenge. So, I had to prepare well to paint outdoors. Paintings posted here were painted mostly at the Durant Nature Park in Raleigh. I had to walk on trails around the park, so, I had also simplified my painting gear. I was surprised at what I could do on location with minimal gear. After months of enjoying nice weather, painting in 40+ degree weather for couple of hours was quite a change! But, I enjoyed it. I also did a painting or two in gouache. Most paintings were completed entirely on location. Others were mostly done on location and then finished in the studio. I have done many fall paintings in the studio. But, the plein air experience is quite different. Nothing compares to the cool autumn air and painting under falling leaves. A painting or two were even done sitting on the ground. It was like painting sitting on a magic carpet of colorful leaves…
So, I have finally done it- plein air painting at the State Fair! And it was as much fun as taking my 6 y/o son Ian to the fair. I have been to the fair for many years and we have taken Ian every year. He loves the fair! I had always wanted to paint at the fair en plain air (I had done a studio painting earlier).
I went to the fair three times this year: once with Ian and Mica and then twice to paint. I was lucky to have beautiful weather. Visit with Ian was for the family fun. The food, rides, exhibits and walking around. My other two visits were to paint. I painted State Fair #2 & 3 on my first plein air adventure at the fair. Many people stopped by and shared kind words. When I walked around carrying my easel and painting supplies, I realized how big the fair was! The fair offers incredible array of subjects. So, I was not satisfied with just two paintings and had to return to paint more! During m second plein air adventure at the fair, I painted State Fair #4 and also made pencil sketch and drawing. Just when the light was almost gone, I painted “Smoked Turkey Legs”. I learned few new things about watercolors and plein air painting. And had great time interacting with people who had stopped by. And those are the reasons enough for me to go back next year!
I was in Galax VA few weeks ago for the Mt. Vale Vineyard plein air paint out. The paint out was to benefit Chestnut Creek School of Arts. This was my first time visiting beautiful Galax VA. The view from the winery is simply breathtaking! I met and painted with many new artists. This was a very fun and relaxed event. And the school staff was very helpful. It got cold and windy which made it a very memorable plein air event. There was an awards ceremony followed by the live auction.
I finished three paintings while dealing with the elements. The first one was the morning view. I finished that before lunch. I started the “Mountain Road” before lunch and finished it after the lunch. A nice lady saw my painting unfold and decided to purchase it before it went for the auction. In the few minutes I had before the auction, I started and finished my third piece- the beautiful afternoon view.
“Morning, Galax VA” won the Judge’s Choice Award. This painting and “Afternoon, Galax VA” are available and I will donate part of the proceeds to the Chestnut Creek School of Arts for the commission I would have paid at the auction.

It is funny how the winner of this painting came today to pick up her print ~ the FIRST day of the NC State Fair. She loves the fair, always has and when she saw this painting for the first time at one of my pop-up gallery showings, she instantly fell in love. She was one of the very first people to sign up for my newsletter, and when it came time to pull the name for the first giveaway, when I saw her name in my hand (we did the drawing the old fashioned way), I was so excited. Amanda would ask me about the painting every time she saw me and she was just couldn’t believe it when we called her to tell her she had won. She, like many others, probably thought that never in a million years would she win, but she did. She enjoys getting my newsletter via email, just once a month, that showcases the beautiful work that I get to paint each day. I had done few Mumbai watercolor paintings back in 2012. I was there visiting my family. My watercolor setup is highly portable: I can paint almost anywhere! Of course, it was not easy painting in Mumbai. It was difficult to control the paint due to humidity. Back in my studio, it is relatively easier and I am able to paint on bigger scale. Here are two recent paintings of the Gateway Of India. The first one is full sheet and the second one is half sheet. The Gateway of India is a busy place! And it was HOT when I was there. Mumbai never slows down and only slightly cools down during the winter. Both the originals are sold but prints are available. I am working on more paintings of Mumbai. I have also done several paintings of my hometown of Amreli. I will be posting those next.
Snow painting of Charlotte North Carolina. I was in Charlotte earlier this year. Right before the Valentine’s day. You may remember the major snow and ice system we had on the East Coast! The bad weather had lasted for couple of days. I almost got snowed in but was fortunate to get home in time. I made this painting day before the heavy snow. I was in Charlotte Downtown (or Uptown). I love this part of Charlotte. Always busy with the activity. And I love painting cityscapes as much as I love painting landscapes and other subjects. It was around lunch time when the snow started falling. The early snow made streets and pavements wet and slowed down the traffic some. Snow makes everything peaceful! I did not have my painting supplies with me. So, I made this painting back at the hotel where I was staying. I painted this on 300 lb CP watercolor paper. So, it has different look compared to my plein air watercolors that are usually done on the 140 lb rough paper.
It snowed heavily next day but I was already on my way home. The snow shut everything down for couple of days. Ian enjoyed the snow days and I got more material for more paintings of snow!
I enjoy painting variety of subjects. And using variety of materials helps me develop different techniques to capture these subjects. Keeps thing interesting. I was in Philadelphia and Annapolis few days ago and look forward to painting both cityscapes and seascapes. And back home, I am enjoying painting nature. Trees and landscapes and little stories. I have also done a series of paintings of Mumbai, India and my beloved hometown of Amreli. Stay tuned for those paintings…
Watercolor painting of my son Ian pulling his sled after a winter storm. Earlier this year we got quite a bit of snow. Little unusual for this area, and as always it brought everything to a standstill! I was traveling to Charlotte and had made it home just in time. Ian loves the snow now, although he was not a fan when he was little. Snow days, snowball fights, making snow angels, hot chocolate, TV, and sledding- what is not to like?! He had fun sledding on his little snow disc. Climb up the street and slide down. And repeat. Only if I had his energy!
One of the change I am looking forward to this year is painting en plein air during the winter. I have painted in the snow before but not much. I always have perfectly good excuses to convince myself that it is not a good idea. Weather. Holidays. And so on. What I like about winter is that it simplifies everything in a landscape. Most tree are bare. Leaves are all on the ground. And when snow covers everything, it simplifies the landscape even more. This is a real contrast to the rich landscape of other seasons here in North Carolina.
Watercolor painting of Durant nature park. I was there painting yesterday and finished a 22×30 plein air watercolor. This painting was done in the studio. I saw this deer one day. Limping along the edge of woods. I love this park. Very quiet. I see new things to paint whenever I visit (it is not very far from where I live). Seasons provide me inspirations for painting the same subjects differently. Everything is lush green at this time of the year. I see deers many times when I am there. I used 300 lb watercolor paper for this painting. I use this paper sometimes for plein air work too. There is a benefit of using the same materials for every painting- you can concentrate entirely on the subject. But, my experience is that this limits the subjects I paint and techniques I use to convey stories. Watercolor painting allows me to work quickly when working en plein air. And when working in the studio, I can slowly paint some of my subjects. I can do dry brushing, for example. And using different papers, paints and brushes help me.
I have been painting more than before and having a good time doing so! New for me this year is going to be painting on larger scale more often. I paint half sheets when painting on location and paint half or full sheet when in studio. I will be painting full sheet watercolors on location. What I like about painting on this scale on location is that, it allows me to learn the brush work. Studio work on any scale can be slower and I can get bogged down in details and in creating finished work. Work done on location is different. I have limited time to capture what I am after. So, I have to work quickly and find ways to paint details using visual language. I use bigger brushes when painting this way. I have also pared down my setup so I can carry everything when I am wandering around the woods. While I have always wanted to paint on bigger scale en plein air, I was more enthused by my recent trip to the Brandywine River museum. Andrew Wyeth has always been my hero and this was the first time when I got to see his watercolors in person. I was amazed at the scale of his paintings- both egg tempera and watercolors. I also got to see some of the paintings that I have never seen online or in printed media before. I am also a fan of N.C. Wyeth and other artists of his era and so enjoyed looking at those paintings as well. I really loved works of Howard Pyle, William T. Richards and Dean Cornwell (one painting- badly crackled but beautiful). I did not get to see some the Andrew Wyeth drybrush paintings which I have always wanted to see. But, that may be a good reason to visit there again!
